The Joy of the Lord Ministry (JLM) traces its origin to a divine calling in 1996 in Akatta, Orlu, Imo State, Nigeria. During a Catholic Charismatic prayer gathering and crusade, the Lord began a work that would grow beyond a single event into an enduring ministry.
At that time, five individuals were spiritually selected and prepared as prayer warriors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Following the crusade, the Lord gave a clear instruction that would define the heart and direction of the ministry:
- “There are more people seeking My face; do not send them away. Accept them, train and mentor them, they are My sheep. For the joy of the Lord shall be your strength.”
In obedience to this divine mandate, the ministry began receiving individuals who were hungry for God. Soon, about thirty people from various regions across Nigeria were drawn together for prayer, discipleship, and spiritual formation.
During its early years, the ministry operated in close alignment with the Catholic Charismatic movement, with the spiritual support and partnership of devoted clergy, including late Rev. Fr. Zeph Uzoma, Rev. Fr. Vincent Chidi Dike, and Rev. Fr. Patrick Ifeanyichukwu Nwokeogu. Together, they nurtured a growing community centered on prayer, teaching, and spiritual renewal.
The foundation of the ministry was built on:
Intercessory prayer and spiritual warfare
Teaching and studying the Word of God
Practices such as the Divine Mercy Prayer and the Stations of the Cross
Deliverance and liberation ministry
A commitment to spiritual growth and renewal
The guiding scriptural mandate has remained rooted in the words of Scripture:
“Go rather to the lost sheep… And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:6–8, NKJV)
Expansion and Continuity
As members relocated and new opportunities emerged, the ministry continued to grow beyond Nigeria. Even across continents, the core mission remained unchanged: to seek God, disciple believers, and serve others.
In the mid-2000s, the ministry expression expanded into small fellowship groups, including a prayer-based brotherhood formed among believers in the United States. These gatherings emphasized unity, prayer, and spiritual accountability.
Formal Establishment
By 2016, the ministry had grown into a broader, more structured fellowship with participants joining from multiple regions, including Boston and California. Weekly online prayer meetings were established, along with regular fasting and spiritual discipline.
The ministry was formally recognized as a non-denominational, non-profit organization, registered under 501(c)(3) in the State of Georgia, United States of America.
Mission and Identity Today
Today, the Joy of the Lord Ministry remains committed to its original calling:
To raise prayer warriors
To disciple believers in truth and holiness
To minister healing, deliverance, and restoration
To serve the less privileged and those in need
To glorify God through faithful service
At its core, the ministry holds firmly to this conviction:
